Start with Baby Steps – Perform a Basic Search for E-Bay Auctions OnlineLet’s start with a simple search and demonstrate how to find what you want. We’ll get to the “..at the price you want” in a bit.
SIDENOTE: If you are already very familiar with basic and advanced searches for e-Bay auctions online, feel free to skip to our eBay search tools review page to find out what search tools to use to improve your search results, automate your searches, and greatly reduce the time you spend looking for online auctions. From the E-Bay home page , you’ll see the e-Bay menu bar at the very top. On the right-hand side of the menu bar, you’ll see the “Start new search” box. Simply click in this box and the text “Start new search” will disappear. Let’s search for some antiques! In the search box, let’s type in “Antique Japanese Bowl”. (Believe it or not, this is actually a super hot item for e-Bay auctions online! Trust me, for the price some of these bowls go for, sometimes up to $1,250.00, you don’t want the kids eating out of them!) Ok, now click on the “Search” button. All of the results will show up listing all of the items that are related to “Antique Japanese Bowl” in the auction titles. This type of basic search will not search through the descriptions of the items to find what we’re looking for. We’ll save that kind of search for the Advanced Search topic later on. You can repeat these steps for other items that may interest you simply by going back to the top where the search box is located and typing in what you want to find. It’s simple, huh? I’d say that was easier than pie! e-Bay auctions online is not scary so far, now is it? Not Enough Items or Too Many Items To Choose From? – Change the List by Performing Advanced SearchsYou have now found several items that are of interest to you, unless you’re searching for something that is very hard to find in e-Bay auctions online. The case is that you will usually find WAY too many items. To top that off, people will try to do just about anything to get your business, so they’ll list completely unrelated things in categories you’re searching in.What if you don’t find enough items, or even any items at all? What do you do? No worries; we’ve got the answer.
SIDENOTE: Remember that you if have not registered on e-Bay yet, you’ll need to so you can follow along in the rest of this guide. Click here to register for an ID to E-Bay auctions online if you don’t already have an e-Bay ID. A new window will open and take you directly to their registration page. Once you are done, simply come back to this window to continue.
Search Title & Description to Increase Your ResultsThe best way to increase your search results is by making a simple check in a check box…the “Search Title and Description” box. This check box is located right below the search box we used in the last section. Simply check this box then click on Search. If the results you get are anything close to what I get when I check that box, then you should find yourself with a pretty good list that is, well, sometimes overwhelming. However, you do want to see all the possible items that you’re interested in and nothing more. So here is how we narrow the list down to only the items we want to see on e-Bay auctions online. Add Words to Your Search Box to Decrease ResultsFirst, you can try adding descriptive words to your search. Let’s try this with our Antique Japanese Bowl example we just did above. Let’s say we were just looking for porcelain bowls, not all the other bowls that show up such as paper bowls and so on.So let’s add “porcelain” to the current search terms so we end up with “Porcelain Antique Japanese Bowls”. The easiest way to do this is simply to click in another search box located a little below the e-Bay logo. You’ll see a yellow “All Items” tab with the search box just below it. Click in this box and add “Porcelain” to the current words in the search box, then click on Search. You’ll notice that the number of items is now reduced and the search results are more specific to what we’re looking for. You can just repeat these steps for whatever the item is that you’re searching for, or in the words of e-Bay’s new TV ads, whatever “IT” is. You’re now able to browse through the items in the list, clicking only on the auctions that are related specifically to what you’re looking for in the e-Bay auctions online. Have fun. Take your time! There are plenty of porcelain antique Japanese bowls out there…well, that or whatever else you’re searching for!
SIDENOTE: Remember this saying that I remind my friends and family of constantly, “There are always good deals. You just have to have some patience and know how to look for them.” Why do I say this? I say this so we avoid the habit of feeling rushed to catch the next “good deal”. Why do you think it is so easy to spend more than you planned on when you go to a real live auction? EXCITEMENT! It is very important to not only your pocketbook, but also to the principle of getting what you want at the price you want. If you don’t remember anything else that I tell you, please remember this: There are always good deals! You just have to have some patience and know how to look for the items you want in e-Bay auctions online!
Looking Only at the Good Stuff! - Narrowing Down the Search ResultsThere are a few things you can do:
NOTE: You can use as little as 1 word and as many words as you want. Just ensure sure to separate each word with a comma. Make sure that there is no space after the comma.
WHEW! Now that we’re past the technical stuff, we can get down to the nitty-gritty, but let’s review just one more time: Use Search Tools to Slice Away The Time To Search – Even Search While You Sleep!Welcome to the sea of businesses trying to get your money!
